18 Things My Dad Was Right About

reposted with permission from www.marcandangel.com.

Fifteen years ago, when I was a freshman in high school, my English teacher gave my class a homework assignment entitled, “Advice for a Younger Generation.”  The concept of the assignment was simple:  Each student had to interview a person who was over the age of 25, gather enough information to write a basic biography of their life and find out what their top tips are for a younger generation.  I chose to interview my dad.  He was 53 at the time and he gave me 18 pieces of advice. The Zen of Doing

In the chaos of the modern world, there is a beauty in simply doing. We’re buffeted wildly by whatever emails, conversations, news, events, demands, that are going on around us. Our minds become a constant deluge of thoughts dwelling in the past, worries of the future, distractions pulling us in every direction. But all of that melts away when we focus on just doing. We Need Your Help!

Dear friends – starting today, through April 30th we are conducting our second annual Spring Campaign to raise funds for our programs.

Your contribution helps us educate an average of 1,500 teens and young adults each month about the facts, myths, risk factors and warning signs of suicidal behavior, what to do in crisis, and how to cope with distress. During the 2009-2010 school year, we delivered presentations to 30 schools – reaching more than 12,000 students.

Today, we are asking for your help. We offer our assemblies to schools in our area at no charge and we rely on fundraising events and donations to support our efforts. While we recognize that these are challenging times, a small contribution goes a long way and your support saves lives. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and your donation is also tax-deductible.

Donating through our site is safe and easy, and you can follow the link below to get started. We hope that you will consider helping us to continue our mission of reducing youth suicides by making a contribution to our Spring Campaign today.  Thank you for your time and your continued support!

Gratefully,
- Dennis Liegghio

60 Ways to Make Life Simple Again

When we were young life was easier, right?  I know sometimes it seems that way.  But the truth is life still is easy.  It always will be.  The only difference is we’re older, and the older we get, the more we complicate things for ourselves.

You see, when we were young we saw the world through simple, hopeful eyes.  We knew what we wanted and we had no biases or concealed agendas.  We liked people who smiled.  We avoided people who frowned.  We ate when we were hungry, drank when we were thirsty, and slept when we were tired. Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

A reader asks, “Which comes first, our thoughts or our feelings?” So, let’s consider this question, as well as how an understanding of our thoughts and feelings can help us lead better lives. But before we begin, let me clarify what I mean by “feelings.” The word has two meanings. First, the sensations we experience, such as tactile, smell, taste, and other forms of sensory input. Second, it is commonly used to mean emotions. When I use the term feelings in this article, I will be referring to the second meaning (emotions).

The reader’s question has been and continues to be asked by many people. It seems as difficult to understand as the mystery of the chicken and the egg. If we cannot have a chicken without first having an egg, and cannot have an egg without first having a chicken, which came first?

Feelings and thoughts are similar, for experts remain divided on which one comes first. Why is that? Look, if I were to give you a map of London and ask you to point out the location of the Brooklyn Bridge, no matter how hard you searched, you would never find it because the Brooklyn Bridge is in New York City, not London. You have to use the right map, don’t you? Well, the questions we ask map out the possible answers. How can I get the right answer by asking the wrong question? Continue reading

Marvel Comics’ Captain America Promotes Suicide Prevention Awareness

Marvel Comics has released Captain America: A Little Help, a free digital comic book available on its website and via the Marvel Comics App for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.

The all-new, 11-page story—written by psychologist Tim Ursiny and illustrated by Nick Dragotta—features a despondent young man contemplating suicide by jumping off a building. After helping Captain America defeat villains battling on a nearby roof, the youth returns to his apartment and calls the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, uttering the only dialogue of the comic: “I need help.”

Captain America: A Little Help is also available in the fifth and final issue of the “I Am an Avenger” limited series released January 12, 2011.
